ICROSS has been at the forefront of improving water for rural communities since 1983. Our Research Unit has been Publishing innovations in preventing water borne disease for over 20 years and we have created hundreds of safe water sources over the last decade. But there is no room for complacency. Over a Billion people in poor areas have no clean water.
In a series of new programmes, ICROSS has identified 7,000 pastoralists with no safe water. 3.4 million People die each year from water related disease. This is the equivalent to the population of Los Angeles… every year. Less than one in three people in Sub-Saharan Africa have access to a proper toilet.
Diarrhoeal infections remain one of the largest causes of disease and illness across the Sub-Sahara. In developing countries, as much as 80% of illnesses are linked to poor water and sanitation conditions. 5 Every 21 seconds a child dies from diarrhea.
Almost 1 out of every 5 deaths under the age of 5 worldwide is due to a water-related disease. Over half of the developing world's primary schools don't have access to water and sanitation facilities. Without toilets, girls often drop out at puberty.
200 million work hours are spent every day by women collecting water. This is time not spent working at an income-generating job, caring for family members, or attending school.
